As part of my new single life, I’ve decided that it’s time to get out and about and try new things that I’d never thought of doing before. It’s more important than ever for me to meet new people and make new friends, so I decided that I was going to join a sewing club.
Yes, I know, I can hear you saying that I’m not likely to meet a new man there, but to be honest, I’m a bit of man at the moment! Surrounding myself with some like-minded ladies appeals to me right now, so I decided it was time to improve myself, develop a useful new skin and meet some great new people.
I went online and did some research to find out about sewing clubs near me and found one that was held on Thursday evenings. Perfect. So, off I went on Thursday, all ready to learn about my new hobby and it was great. The group was made up of some really friendly ladies of all ages who were all keen to learn a new skill. Some of them were beginners like me, and others had been sewing for years and were working on really ambitious projects – one was even in the middle of making her daughter’s wedding dress!

One thing that became very clear was that I would need to invest in a sewing machine if I was going to get anything out of the club. The problem was which one to buy. A quick look online showed me that there were tons of different machines out there, so how did I go about selecting one that was fine for beginners but would give me enough room to grow and improve – after all, I didn’t want to have to buy yet another sewing machine a few months down the line. In the end, I decided to ask the experts in my sewing club to recommend a model for me to use that wouldn’t be too complex for a novice to understand but which would be suitable for me to use for years to come.
Here are the suggestions that they came up with:

More difficult to get to grips with than many other machines aimed at beginners
In the end, I decided to go with the Brother sewing machine. As it’s easier to understand I thought it would be best for my limited skills as a complete novice. Now I can’t wait for Thursday to come round – I’m thinking of starting on my first project – a simple shopping bag!
